Brrrrr. We're in the middle of winter. If you're constantly inching the heat up on the thermostat just to stay warm in your home, it may be time for new windows.
Old windows can let cold air infiltrate your home. If you've had your windows for 10 or more years, it's worth it to "test them out" to see if they're still energy efficient. Here are three easy ways to know if your windows are failing.
Tip #1: At night, ask someone to stand outside your windows. Standing inside your home, take a strong flashlight and travel along the frame edges of each window. If the person outside sees the light shining through, then the frame on the window is failing and letting in cold air.
Tip #2: Do your windows "weep" on a regular basis? Some condensation is normal on window interiors, but if you find yourself drying them off regularly, then it's time to consider new windows.
Tip #3: How much street traffic do you hear inside your home? A slight amount of noise is normal, but if your windows are closed and you're still hearing loud sounds, then it's time to replace your old windows.
